On The Journey...

August 3, 2007
I just got back from delivering a dresser, crib, and high chair to a single mom that we have been trying to help get on her feet.  I brought along a friend to help me with the delivery, and he kept asking me more and more about Journey 2L2.  I think this simple act of kindness re-awakened in him the heart to love and help others and also led to a deeper conversation about the love of God and His love for him.

Week after week we are helping people through the ministry of Journey 2L2, and this furniture delivery is just one example.  Many of you subscribe to our “Project of the Week” email and know of the weekly projects we are doing, but often times there are things going on behind the scenes that don’t get mentioned, the day to day acts of love that the Journey 2L2 staff are engaged in.

One of those “behind the scenes” people we are helping is a guy named Louis. We met Louis at the Co-Existence Festival in New Brunswick a few months ago, and learned that he was awarded a grant to open a boy’s shelter in New Brunswick.  His focus is boys 16 – 21 who have outgrown foster care.  In talking with Louis we learned that he would be needing furniture for the shelter and we offered to help him take care of this need.  Louis sent us a list of furniture and other household items, and as donations have been coming in, we have been checking things off the list for the shelter.  We called Louis this week and asked if he could come get the stuff we had for him because our limited storage space was completely full and we needed the space cleared out so we could fill it up with the rest of the items he needs. While talking to him on the phone he told us, “People keep asking me, ‘What about furniture?’ but I had faith that you would come through, so I thank you for being there for us.”

This is not the first time I have heard this response from people we have helped. The true heart of Journey 2L2, and ultimately God, shines through loud and clear with each connection we make and each promise we fill.  Journey 2L2 is a group of people doing amazing things!  We never make a commitment to help someone because we called everyone in the group and checked that their calendars were clear, we make a commitment because it fits in with our vision and mission and we let God take care of the rest!

I know that the staff are not the only ones loving and serving “behind the scenes” as I have heard many, many stories from you about how you took the time to help someone or bless someone in an unexpected way.  I think it can be so hard for us to take time out of our busy lives, but the rewards are always so much greater than the cost!  If you aren’t actively doing so already, I would really encourage you to make a commitment to take some time out each week to really love and serve someone with no strings attached – I’d love to hear your stories if you do, because that one act of commitment with radically change your life!

Amazed always at the doors God opens for us.

Bob
